We have indicated below a few eye tests which, though they are not to replace a visit to your ophthalmologist, should help you to assess your visual function.

If you find it difficult or are unable to perform any of the following tests, you may have a visual defect, in which case we recommend that you contact an eye doctor.

Visual acuity

This test will assess your visual acuity; follow the instructions carefully to ensure you complete the test correctly.

Infant visual acuity

This test is used to examine visual acuity in pre-school infants, or those without sufficient capacity to perform the test using letters or numbers. In many cases, small children are not willing to collaborate or the responses are confused, so the results merely serve as a guideline.

Amsler grid test

The Amsler grid eye test is very useful for the assessment of central vision, since it can detect early changes in the centre of the retina which would otherwise go unnoticed. This can be quite frequent with problems such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular oedema, high myopia, etc.

Colour vision

Most people can distinguish more than 100 different colours based on the components red, blue and green. However, there are many issues that can affect chromatic vision; using the following test, you can assess whether your perception of colours is correct, or whether you have difficulty or are unable to recognise the spectrum of the basic colours red, blue and green.
