Click the titular of the questions to see the answer of any doubt you might have about Laser Surgery:

For how long has this type of laser intervention been performed?

Since its introduction in 1991, more than one million people have solved a visual problem with
laser eye surgery (LASIK).

up

Can it be used for myopia or hypermetropia with astigmatism?

YES. The LASIK technique can be used to correct myopia or hypermetropia with astigmatism in the same procedure, modifying the curvature of the cornea which is left uniform throughout, thus eliminating the myopia or hypermetropia with astigmatism at the same time.

up

When will I be able to use eye shadow again?

In theory, you will be able to use eye shadow again two weeks after the procedure.

up

¿What is the eye strength limit for receiving laser treatment?

At present, the strength limit to require surgery is around 12 dioptres for myopia and 6 for hypermetropia and astigmatism.

up

Is it a permanent operation?

If the procedure is carried out with the strength stabilised, the fracture problem should be eradicated permanently.

up

How long does the procedure last?

The procedure is very quick, lasting just a few minutes depending on the strength of correction. It requires no previous preparation and, after 30 minutes, following a short rest period and an initial postoperative revision, the patient may leave the clinic to go home on foot.

up

Is it a painful procedure?

Absolutely not. Occasionally, the patient may experience a little discomfort similar to a speck of dust or a slight pressure on the eye. The procedure is carried out using anaesthetic eye drops which are applied to the cornea, and the patient feels nothing throughout the intervention.

up

What happens if I move my eye during the procedure?

Nothing will happen, since the laser is equipped with a system that enables it to follow eye movement.

up

Is the postoperative process very complicated?

Thanks to its simplicity, the LASIK procedure requires very little postoperative: medication: just some simple eye drops and a few artificial tears to be used over a short period of time.

up

What happens after the procedure?

You will need to come for a medical check-up:

 1. After 24 hours.
 2. After one week.
 3. After one month.
 4. After three months, for a final check-up before being discharged.

up

If I decide to go to the operation, how long before I can go back to my daily routine?

Eyesight recovery is normally very quick, with most patients recovering in just a few hours and returning to their regular routine the following day. However, the best results will appear after one week, when the patient's vision becomes fully stable. Nonetheless, this can occasionally take up to one month.

In any case, it is important to remember that although the intervetion is very simple and practically non-invasive, it is still an operation, and, like all operations, it requires a series of careful yet small postoperative checks and a certain amount of recovery time.

up

If due to my eye strength, I am ineligible for the LASIK procedure, what alternatives are available to eliminate my eye problem?

Once your case has been studied, if it should emerge that you cannot undergo the LASIK, procedure due to an elevated eye strength, the alternative would be intraocular refractive surgery.

up

I'm pregnant. Can I undergo laser treatment?

NO. You must wait until after the pregnancy and lactation period. During pregnancy, there may be slight alterations to your eye strength and, during the lactation period, there is a risk that the postoperative medication may enter the breast milk.

up

Does this procedure carry any risk?

Although it is an extraocular procedure carried out at an outpatient clinic, it is still a surgical procedure; therefore, there exists a certain level of risk, albeit minimal. This is why the preoperative clinic appointment carries so much importance, since it allows the ophthalmologist to establish specific medical criteria to avoid any unnecessary risks. At Clínica Baviera, around 50% of patients who come for an appointment are considered "ineligible". In these cases, we provide them with an alternative non-laser surgical treatment, or we simply explain to them that they must keep using glasses and/or contact lenses.

up

Can I rub my eyes?

You cannot rub your eyes during the first two weeks, so it is important to avoid any action that may provoke this, such as getting soap in the eyes, sand, etc. And, during the next four weeks, try to scratch your eye as little as possible.
